Reflections on 10 Years of Reclaiming Dr. King's Legacy

Thank you so much for joining APTP this January for our 10th consecutive year of reclaiming the radical legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr!

This year, in honor of ten years, we held ten days of trainings, film screenings, teach-ins, resource giveaways, our annual march, and more, including a powerful port shutdown for Palestine lead by AROC. It was beautiful to see all the organizers, activists, healers, artists, and families that are part of the APTP community. Thousands of folks from across the Bay Area engaged with us, and it was especially heartwarming to see all of the families with their little ones introducing us to the next generation of freedom fighters.

We know that even in the face of massive right wing and conservative pushback in the Bay Area, our movement is alive and well.

This year, we are committed to uplifting the demand to end the genocide in Gaza — and putting our bodies, time, energy and efforts on the line to make that demand a reality. We believe, and always have, that the struggle for Black liberation and Palestinian liberation are inextricably linked.

None of us are free until all of us are free

None of us are free until all of us are free 〰️

That is why, since our inception, we have built relationships and revolutionary bonds with our Palestinian siblings and have demonstrated commitment to international struggle and international solidarity — as was taught to us by the Black Panther Party. We were honored to have our friend, comrade and sister Linda Sarsour of M-Power join us, even in the midst of her travels across the globe to fight for Palestinian liberation and an immediate end to the current genocide.

We are so deeply grateful for your investment, your time, your presence and your gift of sharing space with us. We hope that for you, like it was for us, the week of reclaiming King’s Radical Legacy made space for you to recommit yourself to his values, ideals, and to fighting for the world he dreamed of and died for. We also hope it made space for you to recommit yourself to walking with APTP in accomplishing our shared goals for another 14 years and beyond.

We would be remiss — even in this act of thanking you — if we didn’t point out that last year, law enforcement in the United States killed the highest number of people on record: 1,152 people. And so far, in 2024, according to the Washington Post, law enforcement has already murdered 51 people (which is surely already outdated). This is post the rebellions of 2020 and way past the slogan “Black Lives Matter” becoming a mainstream call to action. Our work is not over, it isn’t just beginning, but rather remains critically relevant to the times as politicians turn their backs and the opposition manipulates our people's fear and trauma to achieve political gain.

Current conditions require us to stay in the streets, pressure our electeds and engage in service to our community. In addition to showing up in solidarity with Palestinian organizers, APTP will continue working to meet the material needs of families impacted by police terror, expand the services of Mental Health First, rapidly respond to community crisis through our First Responders Network, provide bail support, and host Healing Justice portals free for the community.

Thank you again for your commitment. There’s so much to plug into, but make sure to save the dates February 17th-24th for Community Ready Corps’ 6th Annual Black Solidarity Week!
