Defund OPD

Since 2015, APTP’s Defund OPD committee has been leading the call to defund the police and invest in our communities. OPD takes almost HALF of Oakland's general fund each year, and that percentage has skyrocketed in the past two decades — consuming desperately needed resources from essential city programs and vital services.

It’s time we tore up the blank check. We must Defund OPD!

Cops Out of Traffic

Traffic stops are one of the most dangerous interactions that people have with police—especially Black folks. The only way to reduce police murders is to reduce interactions between our community and the police. To end deadly traffic stops, we must get cops out of traffic.

In the wake of the police murder of Tyre Nichols’ we formed the Safe Roads Save Lives Coalition with the ultimate goal of getting cops out of traffic enforcement.

MH First

MH First, a project of Anti Police-Terror Project, is a cutting-edge new model for non-police response to mental health crisis. The goal of MH First is to respond to mental health crises including, but not limited to, psychiatric emergencies, substance use support, and domestic violence situations that require victim extraction.

Oakland Police Reform

Until we can abolish the police, we’re pushing for effective police oversight in Oakland. We released a report on best practices for independent police oversight based on our legal research, input from impacted families, and lessons learned from the Oakland Police Commission.

Say NO to Mass Surveillance in California: Oppose AB 642

In 2023, we helped to defeat AB 642, a bill that claimed to limit face surveillance, but in reality, would have given law enforcement sweeping authorization to use the technology to scan, track, and record people and inevitably lead to more police abuse, racial profiling, deportations and incarceration.

A mental health crisis should not be a death sentence. Pass the CRISES Act!

In 2021, APTP led the fight to pass the CRISES Act (AB 118) a bill to provide $10M in funds for non-police response to crises in the state of California. This is enough funding to allow for approximately five cities to launch four-year pilot programs to provide mobile response to crises that involve, for example, mental health, substance use, homelessness, or interpersonal violence.

The Black New Deal: Black Oakland Demands in Light of COVID-19 and Rates of Black Death

Across the country, Black People are being infected and dying at disportionate rates from COVID-19. In order to respond effectively to the needs of the Black community our elected officials, health experts, advocates and organizers must take a look at the ways in which the descendants of slaves, Black, African and African-Americans are most impacted by this virus through a racial and class lens.

The Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Act

In 2021, we were part of a coalition that helped pass SB 2, the Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Act, a bill that gives the California state government the ability to decertify police officers who commit serious acts of misconduct.

As abolitionists, we are clear that there is no way to keep ourselves safe while this system of policing exists, but we are also clear that legislation needed to be passed to mitigate the incredible harm the lack of such a policy has caused up and down the state.
